GR-ELLING SIDEBOARD

GR-ELLING SIDEBOARD
"Elling" sideboard, a design Rietveld made in 1919, two years after the Red and Blue chair. Piet Elling, a Dutch architect, bought the original at its 1920 debut at Voor de Kunst in Utrecht, a piece later lost to fire. Production resumed only in 1958, in a small run made by Gerard van de Groenekan, who had entered Rietveld's workshop at sixteen and run it himself from 1928, once Rietveld turned to architecture. The sideboard is symmetrical, with two door panels that open from a central handle. The ends of the battens and the handles are painted white, marking them against the beech structure. The battens forming the structure get smaller around the drawers, two to each side. The four drawers appear to hang within the frame, like suspended containers. Seen from either end, the piece reads as a building in miniature, a dense arrangement of vertical and horizontal battens.Dimensions:
