GR-ELLING SIDEBOARD

Gerrit Rietveld designed the "Elling" sideboard in 1919, and craftsmen executed it around 1974, just two years after the introduction of Rietveld's famous Red and Blue chair. He debuted this extraordinary piece in oak. In fact, Voor de Kunst in Utrecht displayed it in 1920, where the Dutch architect Piet Elling (1897–1962) purchased it. Unfortunately, a fire tragically destroyed this early example. Later, in 1958, one of Rietveld's most trusted cabinetmakers, Gerard van de Groenekan (1904–1994), reintroduced the model and made it in a very limited quantity. Groenekan began working for Rietveld as a sixteen-year-old, and eventually, he took over the woodworking facility in 1928 when Rietveld decided to focus on a career in architecture.
