"Kangaroo Chair," designed in 1955 for administrative and residential buildings in Chandigarh. Possibly one of the best-known objects of Pierre Jeanneret's Chandigarh series. Its silhouette is a single continuous curve, rising from a low seat into the backrest, an organic form. Seen from the side, the chair reads as one uninterrupted line, like a wave, rather than a built structure. Unlike the rest of the series, built from straight-cut wood, this curved form stands apart. Its corners are carved round, softening the wave along its whole length. A related, more angular version exists as PJ-SI-59-D. Seen from behind, the open weave lets the frame structure show through. The seat is low, and the backrest leans further back, giving the chair a specific nonchalance.
